Summer in Villanueva de Fíos

Summer is in full swing, and with it, our small but mighty community continues to take root. Life here moves to the rhythm of the earth, of unexpected rains, of the heat that brings forth fruit, and of the shared efforts of each person who passes through and leaves their mark. This time of year is generous in lessons learned, in sustenance, and in encounters that nourish us as much as the harvests do.
The vegetable garden is alive and full. This year, we opted for dense planting, and nature has responded with abundance. Zucchini has become the star of the summer, both on our plates and in our conversations. The flowers that bloom on the plants are enormous, and every day there seems to be something new growing. Alongside them, other vegetables such as peppers, eggplants, corn, and beans grow in harmony, in an ecosystem that not only nourishes our bodies but also gives us the feeling that we are doing something right.
Beyond farming, summer has been a time for building. The days have been marked by visible tasks and others that are less visible but equally important. We have erected simple structures, transformed spaces, and opened up new areas so that we can live more comfortably. Some areas that were once brambles are now terraces ready to welcome tents, caravans, or simply moments shared under a tree. With each corner that is enabled, this place becomes more like home.
We have also begun to organize ourselves in new ways. With biweekly online meetings, weekly in-person meetings, shared shifts, and agreements that we are testing and adjusting, we try to find a balance between communal life and individual needs. It is not always easy, but there is a sincere desire to listen to each other, to find a rhythm that includes us all. Conversations about the collective, shared shopping, and sustainability are very present, and each week we take small steps toward a more conscious and functional structure.
Energy, in every sense, has been a central theme. The solar system is on its way, and with it, the possibility of having our own electricity and a more stable connection. We dream of energy independence that will allow us to continue growing while caring for the environment. In the meantime, we adapt what we have, reuse materials, and gratefully receive unexpected gifts that come in the form of wood, tools, or ideas.
This summer has also been a time for gatherings. Loved ones have come to visit, lend a hand, share meals, and sit around campfires. Some arrive unexpectedly, others stay for a long time, and others pass through, leaving seeds behind. Sometimes there are tensions, other times celebrations. Living together in community confronts us with reality, with everyday life, and with the constant opportunity to take better care of ourselves.
Today, as we come to the end of July, we feel that something profound is taking shape. This summer is not only leaving its mark on the earth, but also on those of us who inhabit it. We continue to sow, dream, build, and learn. With mud on our feet, wind in our faces, and hearts full of purpose, we continue on our journey across the earth, together.

HISTORY OF TORTUGA
En In August of 2023 Clau was on a land expedition trip in Asturias for a small group that had been forming for some time.
One fine day, she ran into Ana in Infiesto, and they went to see a plot of land covering several hectares near Arriondas... A plot of land with a ruined village, forests, pastures, a fairytale stream, views of the Picos de Europa... a plot of land that screamed abundance!
These two people fell in love with the land and, together with others, began collecting the people they knew who were interested in starting a big movement.
